What Is The Difference Between Natural And Whole Numbers?

The two most important and burning questions in Mathematics are What is the difference between natural and whole numbers and What is the difference between rational and irrational numbers. Due to the similarity in the terms and numbers that are used in the whole and natural numbers, sometimes, the students are not able to understand the difference between them. Here, we will provide a complete overview of the natural and whole numbers. With the help of this overview, it will be easy for the students to understand the difference between natural and whole numbers.

What are the natural numbers?

The numbers that are used for the counting and ordering are usually known as the natural numbers. For example, in the sentence “There are eight balls on the table”, eight is a natural number. On the other hand, if we talk about the ordering, then in the sentence “Lahore is the second largest city in the Pakistan” second is a natural number. The natural numbers usually start from the 1 and there is no end of the natural numbers. If we add 0 in the set of the natural numbers, then it becomes a set of the whole numbers. The set of the natural numbers is denoted by ‘N’. These natural numbers are divided into a lot of categories. The most important and popular categories of the natural numbers are given below;

1)    All the numbers that are completely divisible by 2 or even numbers are called natural numbers. All the numbers that are not completely divisible by 2 or odd numbers are also known as the natural numbers.

2)    A number that is a perfect square of any other number is also known as the natural number. For example, 4, 9, 16, 25, 49, and so on.

3)    All the prime, as well as composite numbers, are also known as the natural numbers.

What are the whole numbers?

If we have a set of the natural numbers and we add 0 in this set, then we will get a set of the whole numbers. A set of the whole numbers is denoted by ‘Z’. All the positive integers come to this set. Some important properties of the whole numbers are given below;

1)    If we add two whole numbers, then we will also get a whole number. For example, if we add 7 and 8 that are whole numbers, then their sum is 15 that is also a whole number.

2)    In some cases, subtraction of the two whole numbers doesn’t give us whole numbers. For example, if we subtract 8 from 3, then the answer is -5 that is a negative integer, but not a whole number.

3)    If we multiply two whole numbers, then we will always get a whole number. On the other hand, if we divide two whole numbers, then sometimes, there is a possibility that we are not able to get the whole numbers.

This is a brief discussion about the natural and whole numbers and with the help of this discussion, it will be easy for you to understand the difference between natural and whole numbers.
